Police Information Check in Surrey: Online or at Surrey Police Service?

Surrey Police Service (SPS) has been Surrey's police of jurisdiction since November 29, 2024, when it replaced the RCMP, and it now handles Police Information Checks for Surrey residents. Checks are in person only at SPS Headquarters or an open community police office, cost $95.90 ($120.90 if fingerprints are needed), and SPS publishes no turnaround time. Which check do you need?

Ask whoever requested the check which type they need before you order. The difference matters: an online check is a standard criminal record check, and some roles in British Columbia require a vulnerable sector check that only the police can do.

An online check is usually enough for

  • Private-sector jobs that ask for a criminal record check — retail, office, trades, hospitality, customer service
  • Landlords and property managers
  • Volunteer roles that don’t involve children, seniors or people with disabilities
  • Checking your own record

Go to Surrey Police Service for

  • Surrey Police Service lists ride-hailing drivers (such as Uber and Lyft) and taxi services, along with teachers, social workers, daycare workers and nurses, as examples of positions that may require a Vulnerable Sector Check. source
  • Organizations covered by BC's Criminal Records Review Act, including school boards, childcare facilities, daycares, hospitals and health boards, must screen staff and volunteers who work with children or vulnerable adults through the provincial Criminal Records Review Program (CRRP), which is separate from a police information check. source
  • Health profession regulators such as the BC College of Nurses and Midwives and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC are governing bodies covered by the Criminal Records Review Act, so their record checks go through the CRRP rather than a local police check. source

Vulnerable Sector Check in Surrey

SafeHire can’t issue a vulnerable sector check, and neither can any other online provider. It has to come from Surrey Police Service. Here is what they require.

Offered with the Police Information Check at no additional cost; fingerprints are required if your gender and date of birth match a pardoned sex offender record ($120.90 total, fingerprints destroyed after 90 days); not done for anyone under 18.

Police Information Check in Surrey: common questions

How much does a Police Information Check cost in Surrey?

A separate $25 federal processing fee may apply. SafeHire's online standard criminal record check costs $64.99, with rush service $10 more.

Does the RCMP or Surrey Police Service do record checks in Surrey now?

Surrey Police Service became Surrey's police of jurisdiction on November 29, 2024, replacing the RCMP, and it now takes Police Information Check applications from Surrey residents at its headquarters and open community police offices. SPS does not publish a turnaround time and says it cannot guarantee same-day service. SafeHire's standard check is done online, 24/7, with most results in about 15 minutes.

I don't live in Surrey. Where do I go?

Surrey Police Service only does checks for Surrey residents; others must go to the police in their home community, and people living outside Canada are directed to the RCMP. SafeHire's online standard criminal record check is available to anyone living in Canada.

When is an online criminal record check not enough in BC?

If you will work with children or vulnerable adults, you may need the police's Vulnerable Sector Check, which SPS does in person for Surrey residents. Organizations covered by BC's Criminal Records Review Act, such as school boards, childcare facilities and hospitals, must use the provincial Criminal Records Review Program instead, which is separate from any police check. SafeHire provides a standard criminal record check only (an RCMP CPIC search conducted by Bridgewater Police Service), not a vulnerable sector check.
