Quick Answer

How do I get a driving record abstract in Canada?

Order it from the province or territory that issued your licence, not the federal government. Fees for a standard abstract run from $10 (Manitoba, Yukon) to $25.45 (Alberta, online). Most provinces let you order online; Nova Scotia and Manitoba do not.

  • Ontario: ServiceOntario 3-year driver record, $12 uncertified (emailed PDF) or $18 certified
  • BC: ICBC, through My ICBC online; ICBC's page does not list a fee
  • Alberta: $25.45 online through Alberta eServices, or $16 plus the agent's service charge at a registry agent
  • Saskatchewan: SGI, $15, online through MySGI, by phone or by form
  • Manitoba: MPI, $10, by form in person, by fax or by mail (no online ordering)
  • Nova Scotia: $18.65, in person or by mail only

A driver's abstract (also called a driving record or driver record) comes from the province or territory that issued your licence, not from the federal government or the RCMP. A standard abstract costs $10 to about $25 depending on where you are licensed: for example $12 uncertified or $18 certified in Ontario, $10 in Manitoba, $15 in Saskatchewan, $18.65 in Nova Scotia and $25 in New Brunswick and PEI. Most provinces let you order online; Nova Scotia and Manitoba do not.

What you get is a summary of your driving record from the licensing authority: typically your licence status, convictions, suspensions and, in most provinces, demerit points. How many years it covers, and whether it shows collisions, depends on the province. The sections below give each one's own fee, ordering options and coverage, from that government's website.

What a driver's abstract is (and is not)

A driver's abstract is a provincial record of your driving history. It is not a criminal record check, which is a separate search of the RCMP's CPIC database. Some abstracts do list Criminal Code convictions: Ontario's 3-year record includes Highway Traffic Act and Criminal Code convictions, and Manitoba's shows Criminal Code convictions for 10 years.

Employers hiring drivers, insurers and licensing bodies are the usual people who ask for one. Commercial drivers are often asked for a separate commercial (National Safety Code) abstract, which several provinces issue alongside the personal one.

Driving Record Abstracts by Province

Ontario — Ministry of Transportation (ServiceOntario)

  • 3-year driver record: $12 uncertified, $18 certified. Shows demerit points, active fine suspensions, and Highway Traffic Act and Criminal Code convictions, suspensions and reinstatements. No address.
  • Online: The uncertified record is emailed as a PDF. A certified record is mailed; certified and mail orders are processed within 15 business days.
  • In person: At ServiceOntario, an uncertified record is provided immediately; a certified record is processed within 15 business days and mailed.
  • Longer records: 5-year and extended records are also $12 or $18. The complete record is $48 uncertified or $54 certified, ordered in person or by mail only, and it is the only Ontario record that shows collisions.
  • Who can order: Ontario says anyone can order a 3-year driver record if they provide a driver's licence number.

British Columbia — ICBC

BC drivers get their abstract through the Insurance Corporation of BC (ICBC), which handles both insurance and licensing in the province.

  • How to order: Through My ICBC online; the abstract is emailed to you, digitally certified. ICBC also takes requests by phone, mail or fax.
  • What it shows: The last 5 years of your driving record, plus your original licence date
  • Cost: ICBC's driving record page does not list a fee — check the price in My ICBC before ordering
  • For employers: Driving jobs often ask for the N print (National Safety Code) abstract instead

Alberta — Alberta Registry Agents

Unlike most provinces, Alberta does not have a central government driver's licence office. Instead, driver abstracts are issued through a network of private registry agents authorized by the provincial government.

  • Online: $25.45 (service charge included) through Alberta eServices, with a verified Alberta.ca Account
  • In person: At a registry agent — $16 government fee plus the agent's own service charge, which each agent sets
  • Types: Standard or Commercial, covering 3, 5 or 10 years
  • What it shows: Licence status, convictions, demerit points and suspensions; the Commercial abstract adds CVSA inspections

Quebec — SAAQ

Quebec driving records are issued by the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ). Its online services list "Request a driving record" among the things you can do online.

  • Cost and processing time: not verified for this update. The SAAQ's driving record pages blocked our automated check on 2026-10-17, so we do not list a fee. Check the SAAQ's driving record request page before you order.

Manitoba — Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI)

  • Cost: $10 for a personal or a commercial driver abstract. A claims experience letter (at-fault claims in the last 10 years) is a separate $15 item, or $25 with the abstract.
  • How to order: No online ordering. Complete the request form, print and sign it, then submit it in person at an Autopac agent or MPI Service Centre, by fax or by mail.
  • Processing time: MPI says requests may take up to five business days.
  • What it shows: Licence status, at-fault collisions, convictions and suspensions. Criminal Code convictions show for 10 years; most other convictions and at-fault collisions for 5 years.

Saskatchewan — SGI

  • Cost: $15 per abstract.
  • How to order: Online through MySGI, by phone at 1-800-667-9868, or with SGI's Driver Abstract Authorization form by fax, email, mail or in person at a motor licence issuer.
  • Coverage: At least 5 years of history, and records go back as far as January 1, 1995 if you ask.
  • Commercial: SGI's National Safety Code commercial abstract adds collisions, convictions and CVSA inspections while driving a Saskatchewan-plated commercial vehicle.
  • Processing time: not published by SGI.

Nova Scotia — Registry of Motor Vehicles

  • Cost: $18.65.
  • How to order: Not available online. Apply in person at an RMV Customer Service Centre, or by mail to Service Nova Scotia (cheque or money order). People living or travelling outside Nova Scotia can use the out-of-province application.
  • What it shows: 5 years of collisions and Motor Vehicle Act convictions, and 10 years of alcohol-related convictions and revocations. It also includes Criminal Code convictions and certain out-of-province offences.
  • Processing time: not published by Service Nova Scotia.

New Brunswick — Service New Brunswick

  • Cost: $25 for a driver record abstract, per the Government of New Brunswick's driver records page.
  • How to order: A New Brunswick driver's licence number is required. The page does not set out the ordering channels for a personal abstract, so contact Service New Brunswick.
  • Processing time and coverage: not published on that page.

Newfoundland and Labrador — Motor Registration Division

  • Cost: $15, or $10 for seniors, under the province's driver fees policy (dated December 21, 2023).
  • How to order: Online through MyGovNL, or with the application form, paying by cheque or money order (mailed or dropped at a Motor Registration office) or by credit card with an authorization form.
  • Processing time: The province says to allow three business days for processing of form requests.

Prince Edward Island — Highway Safety Division

  • Cost: $25, per the province's driver abstract request form.
  • How to order: Online through eServices PEI with your PEI licence number, or with the request form by fax or email. You choose mail (to the PEI address on your file) or pickup at an Access PEI location, with photo ID.
  • Processing time: not published.

Yukon — Motor Vehicles

  • Cost: $10.
  • How to order: Online (credit card), where you can download and print it right away; by email or fax with the request form (up to 2 business days); or in person at a Motor Vehicles office.
  • What it shows: Your driving history, with offences from the last 5 years.

Northwest Territories — Driver and Vehicle Services

  • Cost: The NWT page lists both $20 and $19.00 for a driver abstract request, so confirm the amount when you order.
  • How to order: NWT residents can get it online or at a driver and vehicle office. Former residents contact their previous office.
  • What it shows: A 3-year summary of demerit points, convictions and suspensions.

Nunavut — Motor Vehicles Division

Nunavut abstracts are requested with the Government of Nunavut's Driver's Abstract and Accident Request form. Its page blocked our automated check on 2026-10-17, so the fee and processing time are not listed here; contact the Motor Vehicles Division.

Do You Also Need a Criminal Record Check?

Employers who ask for a driver's abstract often ask for a criminal record check as well, because the abstract only covers your driving record. If yours does, SafeHire runs a standard Canadian criminal record check online: a name and date of birth search of the RCMP's CPIC database, done with a police service. It costs $64.99, needs no appointment and has no residency rule. Start your criminal record check.

SafeHire does not sell driver's abstracts. Order yours from your province or territory as described above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a driver abstract the same as a criminal record check?

No. A driver's abstract comes from your provincial or territorial licensing authority and covers your driving record. A criminal record check is a search of the RCMP's CPIC database. Some abstracts list certain Criminal Code convictions (Ontario, Manitoba and Nova Scotia say theirs do), but an abstract is not a substitute for a criminal record check.

Which province do I order from?

The province or territory that issued your licence, because that is where your driver record is held. If you have moved, the NWT, for example, tells former residents to contact their previous office.

How far back does a driver abstract go?

It depends on the province. Ontario's standard record covers 3 years, with longer and complete records available; Saskatchewan issues at least 5 years and can go back to 1995; Nova Scotia shows 5 years of collisions and Motor Vehicle Act convictions and 10 years of alcohol-related convictions; Manitoba shows Criminal Code convictions for 10 years; the NWT abstract covers 3 years.

How much does a driver abstract cost in Canada?

For a standard abstract: Manitoba $10, Yukon $10, Ontario $12 uncertified or $18 certified, Saskatchewan $15, Newfoundland and Labrador $15 ($10 for seniors), Nova Scotia $18.65, the NWT $19 or $20, New Brunswick $25, PEI $25 and Alberta $25.45 online (or $16 plus the agent's charge at a registry). ICBC (BC) and the SAAQ (Quebec) fees are not listed here; see their sections above.

Can an employer get my driver abstract?

It depends on the province. Ontario says anyone with your licence number can order your 3-year driver record. Manitoba issues an abstract only to the driver or someone with the driver's written permission, and Newfoundland and Labrador asks for the driver's written permission when an employer requests it. Check your own province's rules.

Do I need a certified copy?

Only if the person asking says so. Ontario sells both: the uncertified record ordered online is emailed as a PDF, while a certified record is mailed and is processed within 15 business days.
