Quick Answer

How do I get a driver's abstract in Manitoba?

Order it from Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI). A personal driver abstract costs $10. Fill in MPI's request form, print and sign it, then take it to any Autopac agent or MPI Service Centre, fax it, or mail it to MPI Driver Records and Suspensions. MPI says requests can take up to five business days. MPI's page does not list an online ordering option.

  • Personal driver abstract: $10
  • Commercial driver abstract (Classes 1–4): $10
  • Claims experience letter: $15, or $25 with an abstract
  • Order at an Autopac agent or MPI Service Centre, by fax or by mail
  • Requests may take up to five business days

The short answer

In Manitoba, driver abstracts come from Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI). A personal driver abstract costs $10. You fill in MPI's request form, print and sign it, then hand it in at any Autopac agent or MPI Service Centre, fax it, or mail it to MPI. MPI says requests can take up to five business days to process. MPI's driving record page does not list an online ordering option.

The abstract shows your licence details plus at-fault collisions, convictions, suspensions, disqualifications and prohibitions. Most entries stay on it for 5 years; Criminal Code convictions stay for 10.

Which MPI record do you need?

RecordWhat it's forFee
Personal driver abstractProof of non-commercial driving experience for employment, legal purposes, or a licence or insurance after moving$10
Commercial driver abstractProof of commercial (Classes 1–4) driving experience, used by transportation employers$10
Claims experience letterYour at-fault claims with MPI over the last 10 years, usually requested by out-of-province insurers$15
Claims experience letter + personal abstractBoth together$25

What a Manitoba driver abstract shows

According to MPI, the personal driver abstract shows the information on file at the time of the request, including:

  • name, address, driver's licence number, date of birth, gender, height and eye colour
  • licence class, status, effective and expiry dates, date first licensed, restrictions and conditions
  • at-fault collisions
  • convictions (a discharge under the Criminal Code for certain driving offences may be treated as a conviction under the Highway Traffic Act)
  • suspensions, disqualifications and prohibitions

The commercial abstract includes everything on the personal abstract, plus a 5-year history of convictions under trucking and dangerous goods laws, including hours of service, vehicle inspection, load securement and weights and dimensions regulations.

How long entries stay on the abstract

Active suspensions, disqualifications and prohibitions always appear. History is shown for:

EntryHow long it shows
Criminal Code convictions10 years from the date of the offence
Drive while disqualified (HTA) convictions10 years from the date of the offence
All other convictions (e.g. HTA)5 years from the date of the offence
Inactive suspensions and disqualifications (including roadside administrative suspensions)5 years from the end of the suspension
At-fault collisions5 years from the date of the collision

How to order

Fill in MPI's driver abstract request form on your computer or phone, print it and sign it. For a commercial abstract, tick the commercial box. Then submit it one of these ways:

  • In person: any Autopac agent or MPI Service Centre
  • Fax (personal): 204-954-5357 or 1-866-323-0543 (toll free)
  • Fax (commercial): 204-985-8105 or 1-866-317-3267 (toll free)
  • Mail: Manitoba Public Insurance, Driver Records and Suspensions, Box 6300, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4A4

Payment: Visa or Mastercard, a certified cheque or money order payable to Manitoba Public Insurance, or cash or debit (in person only).

MPI asks that you use its current form without altering it. For questions, call 204-985-7000 or 1-800-665-2410 (toll free).

Employers and third parties

MPI issues an abstract only to the driver or to someone the driver has given written permission. An employer can order your abstract using MPI's current request form signed by you. Your signed authorization is valid for two years from the date you sign it, and MPI doesn't keep it on file.

If an employer just needs to confirm your licence is valid, MPI's online Licence Lookup tool shows a licence's validity and current restrictions.

Also need a criminal record check?

Employers who hire drivers often ask for a criminal record check as well. A driver abstract only covers driving-related offences. SafeHire runs an online Canadian criminal record check, a name and date of birth search of the RCMP's CPIC database conducted with a police service. It costs $64.99 and you don't need an appointment. Order a criminal record check online, or see our Winnipeg and Manitoba pages for local police options.

SafeHire does not sell driver's abstracts. Order yours from MPI as described above.
