BC Driver's Abstract: How to Get Your ICBC Driving Record
How to get your ICBC driving record online, what the 5-year driver's abstract shows, and when you need the commercial (N print) abstract or your insurance and claims history instead.

How do I get my driver's abstract in BC?
Request it from ICBC through My ICBC (my.icbc.com). ICBC emails the record to you as a digitally certified attachment. You can also ask ICBC's driver licensing information line to email or mail it to you or to another organization. The abstract shows when your licence was first issued and your tickets and offences from the last five years.
- Online: My ICBC, sign in with your BC Services Card account or Interac Verification Service
- By phone: ICBC driver licensing information line, with your licence number ready
- Covers: the last 5 years, plus your original licence date
- Employers: commercial driving jobs use the N print (National Safety Code) abstract
In BC your driving record comes from ICBC, not the provincial government. The quickest way to get it is to request it in My ICBC at my.icbc.com: ICBC sends it by email, and the attached record is digitally certified by ICBC. If you don't want to use My ICBC, call ICBC's driver licensing information line with your driver's licence number, and ICBC can email or mail the record to you or to another organization you choose.
ICBC calls this record your driver's abstract. It shows when your licence was first issued and any tickets or other offences from the previous five years. ICBC's driving record page does not list a fee for it.
Which ICBC record do you need?
ICBC offers several records, and the one you need depends on who's asking.
| Record | What it shows | Typical use (per ICBC or the Province) |
|---|---|---|
| Driver's abstract (driving record) | Original licence date and tickets/offences from the last 5 years; ICBC calls it "a public (P) record of your basic driving history" | Licensing in another province, car-sharing sign-ups, volunteer driving for school activities |
| Commercial driving record (National Safety Code abstract, "N" print) | Basic driving history plus commercial vehicle-related convictions from the last 5 years | Employment; required for rideshare and taxi drivers |
| Insurance and claims history | Your insurance coverage and claims history; claims can go back up to 20 years | Buying car insurance after moving out of BC |
| Driver factor report | A three-decimal number based on your driving experience and crash history (1.000 is the baseline; lower is better) | Insurance pricing |
If a job ad asks for a "driver's abstract" and the job is behind the wheel, ask whether they want the N print version. ICBC describes the N print as an enhanced abstract that includes non-moving violations and was designed for National Safety Code purposes.
What's on a BC driver's abstract
ICBC's guide to reading your abstract lists these parts:
- Licence number, class and type (for example, a five-year renewal)
- Birthdate and expiry date
- Driver status: Normal, Hold, Prohib (prohibited from driving), Surrender or Deceased. ICBC notes a Hold status doesn't mean the licence is invalid; it can come from an administrative problem, a required medical exam or outstanding debts.
- Original date: the date your first non-learner licence was issued
- Restrictions and endorsements, such as corrective lenses required, air brakes permitted, ignition interlock required, or graduated licensing conditions
- Each contravention: violation date, disposition date, the act and section (for example MVA for the Motor Vehicle Act), a short description, the driver penalty points, and the location
- NSC column: a "Y" means the vehicle was operating under a National Safety Code certificate
Penalty points can come from Motor Vehicle Act tickets and also from certain Criminal Code convictions, such as impaired driving.
How to get it online through My ICBC
- Go to my.icbc.com and sign in with your BC Services Card account or through your bank with Interac Verification Service.
- Under driver licensing, request your driver record. My ICBC also handles driver factor, address history and commercial driving records.
- Check your email. If nothing arrives, ICBC says to check your spam or junk folder and try again.
You can use My ICBC if you have a BC driver's licence, a BCID, a BC Services Card, an ICBC policy or an ICBC claim. ICBC says you can't use it if you're located outside Canada and the US, or if you're a commercial customer.
ICBC also warns that email isn't a secure way to send sensitive personal information. If that concerns you, use the phone, mail or fax options instead.
Other ways to get it
- By phone, mail or fax: contact ICBC's driver licensing information line (listed on ICBC's contact page) and have your licence number ready. ICBC can email or mail the record to you or to another organization.
- In person: ICBC lists "accessing your driving record" among the services that are available online or by phone and don't need an appointment at a driver licensing office.
- Fleets and carriers: employers who need N print abstracts for several drivers can use ICBC's National Safety Code Abstract request form (MV2610). Carriers who use it agree not to release a driver's information to a third party without that driver's consent.
Driving for a living in BC
Rideshare and taxi drivers (passenger directed vehicles) have specific rules set by the Province:
- A Class 1, 2 or 4 licence
- An N print abstract from ICBC. Drivers with four or more pointable offences in the two-year review period aren't eligible.
- Drivers who haven't lived in BC for three years also need an abstract from their previous jurisdiction.
- A Police Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Check, done by the local RCMP detachment or municipal police, renewed every two years.
That last requirement can only be met through a police service. It's not something an online provider can issue.
Also need a criminal record check?
For other driving jobs, like delivery, courier, moving or trucking, employers often ask for a criminal record check as well as the abstract. The abstract comes from ICBC; the criminal record check comes from police records, so you get them separately.
SafeHire runs a name and date-of-birth criminal record check online (a search of the RCMP's CPIC database, conducted with a police service), with no appointment: order one here. It is not a vulnerable sector check, so it won't satisfy the rideshare/taxi requirement above or any role driving children or vulnerable adults.
For how police checks work in your city, see our Vancouver, Surrey and Burnaby pages, or the BC criminal record check guide.
FAQ
How do I get my ICBC driving record online?
Sign in to My ICBC at my.icbc.com and request your driver record. ICBC emails it to you as a digitally certified record.
How much does a BC driver's abstract cost?
ICBC's driving record page doesn't publish a fee. Check the price shown in My ICBC, or ask the driver licensing information line, before you order.
How many years does a BC driver's abstract cover?
Five years of tickets and offences, plus the date your licence was first issued. Insurance and claims history is a separate record and can go back up to 20 years.
What is an N print abstract?
It's ICBC's commercial driving record, made for National Safety Code purposes. It includes non-moving violations and commercial vehicle-related convictions. ICBC lists it for employment purposes, and rideshare and taxi drivers are required to have one.
Can I send my abstract straight to an employer?
Yes. Through the driver licensing information line, ICBC can email or mail your record to another organization of your choice.
Is the driver's abstract the same as the insurance and claims history?
No. The abstract is your licence and violation history. The insurance and claims history shows your coverage and claims, and is what insurers ask for when you move out of BC.
Does a driver's abstract show criminal convictions?
It shows driving-related contraventions and points, including points from certain Criminal Code driving convictions such as impaired driving. It is not a criminal record check. For other provinces, see driving record abstracts across Canada.
